The International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) is part of the family of International Codes developed by the International Code Council, a widely recognized building code development organization. The IECC is applicable to all residential and commercial buildings and provides the minimum energy efficiency provisions for residential and commercial buildings. The code contains building envelope requirements for thermal performance and air leakage while making allowances for different climate zones. Because it is written in mandatory, enforceable language, state and local jurisdictions can easily adopt the model as their energy code.
There are several versions of the IECC. The first IECC was released in 1998. This was followed by versions that produce even greater energy savings: the 2000 IECC with its 2001 supplement and the 2003 IECC with its 2004 supplement. The most current version is IECC 2006.
