The International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and ASHRAE Standard 90.1 are the benchmark energy codes by which the DOE makes its determinations for the purposes of fulfilling the mandate set forth by the EPCA and EPAct. Collectively, the IECC and ASHRAE Standard 90.1 are commonly referred to as the national model [energy] codes. Many states reference these standards in their state building or energy conservation codes, although a number of states have also developed their own energy codes. States that reference the model codes frequently introduce amendments to adapt the codes to their specific climate and political environment. In fact, the IECC itself references ASHRAE 90.1 as an alternative to the commercial building energy provisions of the IECC.
The model codes are generally promulgated once every three years, with amendments and supplements made available in between editions.
