Gov. Easley announces N.C. wins grant for energy savings program

On June 30, 2008, Gov. Mike Easley announced that North Carolina has won a grant from the National Governors Association (NGA) to develop an innovative program to increase energy building code inspections that could yield utility cost savings of up to $15 million a year. North Carolina is one of 12 states to receive the grants from the association's Center for Best Practices.

The grants, awarded by a group of independent reviewers, come from the NGA's "Securing a Clean Energy Future" initiative that is designed to help states overcome obstacles to energy efficiency and conservation and use clean energy resources. The other states that received the $50,000 grants are Alabama, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Montana and Utah.

The grant, which is being matched by a portion of state funds and in-kind resources, will be used to improve training for building code officials including inspectors, builders and architects. The effort will also include working with the building inspection departments in the state's 100 counties and 180 municipalities.
